We invite people to consider questions of faith: who is God, what does Jesus have to do with us, what does it mean to believe in something – in anything?īesides all that, we like each other for the most part. We have events like our book groups, the "Let Those With Ears" preaching series, featuring preachers of color, and our not-really-annual fall community festival to spark conversation, but we also gather for worship every week, learning to connect the dots of faith and citizenship, of personal and public belief, of the reign of God on earth and in heaven. We do all this because we believe the church is supposed to be about something bigger than itself. We’ve rallied for immigrant children, for marriage equality, for an end to race-based injustice, for fair housing, for healthcare, safe and affordable water, income equality, for civil rights issues wherever they are. The flag has been our calling card at any number of protests, from Selma to Standing Rock, from Washington DC to Vassar, Michigan. So this new name, Peoples Church of Flint, then, is first a reflection of a long history of this congregation caring for people, standing for justice, working for well-being and second a restatement of our commitment to what is right - the vision of God of a world that works for all.Īs you enter the worship space, you can see the Flag of Humanity, a home-grown Peoples Church of Flint symbol of what we believe – that we are in the world to make it a better place. Examples came to mind: The Peoples Law Office in Chicago that defended the Black Panthers Peoples Grocery in Memphis, where Ida B Wells witnessed racist hatred and began her journalistic crusade against lynching Peoples Clinic in Austin, where so many sought free health care in an unaffordable economy The Peoples Water Board in Detroit, which has been fighting for years for safe and accessible water, protecting people from the ravages of corporate indifference. “Peoples” has a long history of pursuing justice for oppressed and marginalized folks. The congregation, following the lead of Jesus, of Isaiah, of scripture, had put the Common Good at the center of its life. The Statement of Faith, the newly drawn Garland Declaration, and the new location all seemed to point to a congregation committed to the well-being of people - not simply individual people who crossed its path (although there is that), but a world of people drowning in the excesses of capitalism and dying from lack of the things that hold life together. With its new mission tagline, “Joyfully Defiant for the Sake of a Just World,” the congregation leadership began another conversation about whether a new name might better suit this congregation as it emerged prepared for ministry in the 21st century. The move away from the woods was a metaphor of sorts for its move away from the bucolic, pastoral “suburban” life. In 2018, Woodside left East Court Street and, after a hiatus in Central Park, landed in Carriage Town just 2 blocks from where it first built in 1872. In 2014, Woodside called Pastor Deb Conrad and began a years-long process of redefining its mission, clarifying its community presence, and coming to terms with the changing realities of both Woodside and of Flint. In the 1960s, First Baptist Church (c 1853) began doing business as Woodside Church, a reflection of the times, its mission and sensibilities, and its new location on East Court Street - next to several acres of woods. We even trash talk and stretch the rules a little bit. Schultz, a 1968 Connetquot graduate, said: ‘We keep coming back every year, so it must be good. And then there’s the laughs and the camaraderie. I get my running in and we get plenty of exercise. “I just enjoy the whole experience,” he said. Schultz, a slick-fielding shortstop, is one of the fastest runners indoors. He plays for The Streaks, the nine-time outdoor summer league champion of the Brookhaven A League. Ken Schultz, a 72-year-old retired social studies teacher from Oakdale, joined the league to prepare for the outdoor season. A fine group of competitive senior gentlemen who get together to share the love of the game.” It reminds us of all that once was good and could be again.’ Well, this quote sums up our indoor purpose. “Terrence Mann, the author, played by James Earl Jones, says to Kevin Costner, who plays the main character Ray, ‘the one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. “One of my favorite movies is ‘Field of Dreams’,” Coppola said. A lifetime fan of the Yankees and Mantle, Coppola loves to tell stories during the games about The Mick. The reigning single-season home run champion hit 12 dingers in the league’s inaugural winter season of 2012. I basically got a second lease on life.”Ĭoppola usually is found playing in his Mickey Mantle Yankees home pinstripe jersey. I completely recovered and slowly came back to play for a team managed by the well-known George Martin and enjoying myself again. “I didn’t know if I’d ever play again before the surgery,” Coppola said. And you would never know it watching how the indoor all-time home run leader plays the game. James on Monday.Ĭoppola had successful sextuple open-heart surgery in 2015. Nothing stops these guys from playing.”Īl Coppola of Medford bats during a senior softball league game at The Sports Arena in St. “We’ve had guys come back from heart attacks and all kinds of cancer survivors. “Collectively we’ve had every conceivable surgery known to man,” Al Coppola, 74, a retired Earth Science teacher in Deer Park who lives in Medford, said with a laugh. Indoor softball is played in an indoor lacrosse arena with artificial turf - that’s “artificial,” like the replacement hips, shoulders and knees many of the players have. The senior winter indoor league is proof positive that these guys are serious all year. Players pay $9 for a three-hour indoor session of softball and entertainment, which can come in many forms: botched defensive plays, bad baserunning, swings and misses, good-natured heckling from the bench and nicknames for all the players. And although it’s competitive, it’s more for fun and exercise and enjoying being with the guys. “The competition level is different in all leagues,” Davide said. There currently are 48 teams of players 60 and over who play in the summer on Long Island. There is no shortage of seniors over 60 playing softball. We’ve become the best of friends.”ĭavide recently was inducted into the National Softball Hall of Fame by the American Softball Association in Oklahoma City. “And then we played together for 18 years. “We played on opposing teams in national tournaments for a long time,” said Davide, 75, who coached baseball at Dowling College as well as high school baseball for a total of 35 years. Through competition in the league, the two have formed a special bond. James on Monday.įor more than a decade, Hannan and Davide have shared this routine from early December to late March. Members of the senior softball league pose for a group photo at The Sports Arena in St. “It’s part of the charm of the who’s who of indoor softball.” “You never know who’s going to be there,” Hannan said. They meet up with 32 to 40 other men who have the same passion for three hours of indoor senior softball. When the ferry docks, Hannan meets his close friend, John Davide of Centereach, who then drives 30 minutes to batting practice at the Smithtown Sports Arena. We’re not getting any younger, but it’s incredible what we’re doing at our age. “The two greatest days of every week are the ones that I step onto the field with all my friends,” the retired Hannan said. (In the past, the space where Owamni now sits had once been home to the state’s first Japanese restaurant, Fuji Ya.) Six years later, the space was finally ready, and Owamni opened its doors on July 19. In 2016, the Minneapolis Park Board chose Sherman and Thompson to open a new restaurant at the Water Works Pavilion, a new park pavilion and site that sits right by St. Owamni is just one part of their efforts the duo also founded a nonprofit called NATIFS, which stands for North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems, of which Thompson is the executive director. We try to spend some time with them and talk about their own experiences and the healing process that this restaurant really represents.” “Every week, I see someone who is literally weeping into their plate. government through the course of assimilation, genocide, and continued oppression,” says Thompson. “We have people who come in and want to talk about the mission and how important it is that they have access to these foods, and they know how these foods were systematically removed by the U.S. government, and the settlers who eventually made their homes on native lands. Together with Thompson, a Minnesota native and lineal descendant of the Wahpeton-Sisseton and Mdewakanton Dakota tribes, they’ve both made it their mission to spotlight foods and traditions that, for so long, had been suppressed - or erased - by the U.S. The only ingredients Sherman and his team cook with are originally from the land: bison, rabbit, fish from the lake, wild plants, and Native American heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables. At Owamni, you will not find anything made with dairy, wheat flour, cane sugar, beef, chicken, or pork. Sherman, a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe, has spent much of his 30-plus-year career as a chef raising awareness about Indigenous foodways, with a focus on modern Indigenous foods. Make sure your computer is up to date, video card drivers, sound drivers etc.Bandwidth intensive services should be closed to prevent bandwidth saturation, loss of connection quality and possibly connection loss. It’s always a pretty good idea to make sure there’s enough bandwidth available on you local network before trying to play multiplayer games and this especially applies to Trailmakers because we have a lot of physics that needs to be synchronized. Make sure you don’t have anything downloading in the background i.e., streaming services (Netflix, HBO, etc.), torrent clients and the like.If it doesn’t check out, try reinstalling Trailmakers entirely. This step will check if there’s anything wrong with your installed version of Trailmakers. The bottommost button says “Verify Integrity of Game Files”. In the Steam Library, right-click Trailmakers, choose “properties” and switch to the “Local Files” tab. Sorry, I know this is the go-to catch-all answer of every tier 1 support out there, but it actually has some chance of helping as it re-allocates the network resources which may otherwise be blocking your connection. You’ll need to shut down Trailmakers again to do this, but restarting steam resets your connection tokens and can help establishing new network connections. Stopping and restarting an application may free up resources that could otherwise be unavailable to it. Unfortunately, Trailmakers does not support cross-platform multiplayer (between Playstation and Steam, for example).įor Steam players, these are the steps you need to go through to make sure that you can connect to other players: Wi-Fi connections have a wide variance in reliability and bandwidth, and can dramatically affect the quality of online gameplay.Īre you having problems playing with a friend online?įirst, make sure you’re both playing on the same platform. There are 2 huge sandbox maps to explore, full of challenges and obstacles to overcome and test your vehicles limits. Create cars, planes, helicopters, boats, submarines, hovercraft, or anything else you can imagine in an attempt to find all the pieces. With an on-the-fly free build mode, you can customize your vehicle or create an entirely new one (as long as you have the parts). These pieces are scattered everywhere from floating islands to the depths of the ocean. You now must navigate this alien world and recover the salvage from your ship, turning each into a unique block to build with, and ultimately building yourself a new ship, so you can escape the planet. In the Story mode, your ship is struck by a meteor, and the parts scattered over an alien world. From wild races, or head to head combat, to a free roaming adventure in a solo story or multiplayer sandbox world, Trailmakers has a little something for nearly everyone. From wild races, or head to head combat, to a free roaming adventure in a solo story Trailmakers is a Sandbox Vehicle Building adventure game. Trailmakers is a Sandbox Vehicle Building adventure game. If you like making vehicles and other stuff with wheels, engines, wings etc etc, This wil give you plenty of decent fun. Sometimes the possibilities seem endless. Cuz even with it's limitation cap in blocks, the builds can still get pretty complicated. Don't let the few downsides hold you back to buy this great builder. So, for the amount of fun i had with building stuff alone this game is a well deserved 8 for me. I've seen the wildest creation in the store uploaded by others/ Almost endless possibilities. You can make a unique vehicle with only a few dozen blocks. We had the High seas dlc that adds new blocks too. We had some good updates with logical blocks. there are many options in changing the physics in things. You can adjust every hinge and rotor/axle etc. Keep in mind, i love lego, and i didnt had any issues with the limited amount of blocks that some of the people here are talking about. etc But where the game really shines is the building of stuff. The worlds could do with some more stuff. But this is also managed by starting the game again, and 30 sec later you're in. Also the game fails to start from the beginning every 1 on 3 times. It freezes at least 1 time per evening (but saves are always kept, and it's up and running on my xbox series s in no time). So i felt compelled to say something nice here, seeing the bad reviews. And i had tons and tons of fun and hours into this game even before i read a review. |
